BCS, Public Membership Report

Built in Power BI, this report was made public with the aim of supplying committee members and volunteers with key information regarding membership volumes within specific Branches and Specialist Groups within the BCS.

This report was specifically challenging, knowing that it would be shared publically required additional thinking in regards to the queries within the data model - ensuring that everything was suitably aggregated. Another challenge arose from the map on the first page, the first iteration detailed Branches down to the postcode level and this severly impacted the user experience as it really slowed the load times. To combat this, I created a custom GeoJSON shape map so the report only showed the relevant Branches rather than hundreds of postcode regions, not only did this increase the report performance but it also made Branch metrics much more concise and easily reachable.

Extracting energy usage data

Being a customer of Octopus Energy, I wrote a Python script to gather my energy usage data. Whilst accessible via their provided smart meter, I wrote this as the smart meter has fixed relative date references e.g. 'yesterday', 'last week', 'this month'. By having a custom script, I could decide on the date ranges and how to aggregate the data.

This script primarily uses the Requests and Pandas libraries. By feeding it a few variables such as your smart meter serial numbers and customer API key, the script prompts you to enter your date ranges and then calls on Octopus Energy's API to gather electricity and gas usage data in kWh in 30 minute intervals. The results of each API call are appended onto electricty and gas dataframes and then output to a single CSV file.

This is still a work-in-progress as I am currently extending the script and making use of the Bokeh library to produce a standalone data-visualisation report in a HTML file based on the data produced in the CSV file.

2020 Swindon Crime Map

As part of a professional certification in Python for Data Science, I came across the Folium library for plotting geospatial data interactively.

I'd seen similar maps but heavily centered on London and so I thought I'd build one for somewhere a bit more local to myself.

In an effort to brush-up on previously learnt web development skills, I thought I'd attempt to make this portfolio site from scratch rather than relying on website-builders such as Wordpress, Square Space etc.

It's certainly been a challenge! I learnt a lot of things in building this site, I especially wanted to focus on keeping it 'severless' and as such have built the entire thing within AWS and it's associated microservices.

This site makes use of S3 to host the HTML, CSS and JS files, it also uses a combination of the AWS API Gateway, Simple-Email-Service and a Lambda script to handle submissions to the Get-in-touch form.
